What are Insulated Concrete Forms?

ICF walls are created using a system of insulating concrete forms.

A single ICF form consists of two pieces of rigid foam (expanded polystyrene) connected with plastic ties, as pictured below:

The concrete forms are stacked together to form the walls of the new home.

The ICF concrete blocks have a tongue-and-groove (not unlike Lego building blocks) so they easily and securely connect, without the need for any special tools or building crews.

One of the biggest benefits of ICF construction is the astonishing speed of assembly. The whole process of exterior framing can be completed in less than a week:

a day or two to assemble the ICF forms into the wall structure,
a few hours to fill the forms with liquid concrete,
and another few days for the concrete to cure into a solid one-piece structure.

Once the Insulated Concrete Forms are stacked and ready, steel rebar is placed in the hollow interior of the insulated concrete forms, to provide extra strength to the ICF house.

Your new ICF home won't just be made of concrete, but reinforced concrete... much like skyscrapers and highway bridges.

At this point, all that is left is to fill the hollow forms with concrete, and allow it to cure into an phenomenally strong new home.
